Quasi-Isotropic Carbon Fibre Sheets – Double-Sided Smooth 3k Twill

Quasi-Isotropic Carbon Fibre Sheets – Double-Sided Smooth 3k Twill are manufactured by Juno Composites to deliver superior structural performance compared to conventional autoclave and resin infusion laminates. Built from multiple layers of quadaxial carbon fibre reinforcement (0°, 90°, +45°, -45°) infused perfectly with an epoxy resin system, these sheets achieve quasi-isotropic in-plane mechanical properties and a high 61% fibre volume fraction (Vf).Every sheet is void-free, dimensionally stable, and ISO 9001-certified

Each sheet is finished with a 3k 2×2 twill weave on both faces, providing a smooth, engineering-grade moulded surface on both sides (Class C finish). While smooth to the touch, Class C surfaces may contain minor cosmetic scratches that do not affect structural performance.

Why This Layup?

The quadaxial non-crimp carbon core delivers high stiffness and strength in multiple in-plane directions because the fibre tows are laid straight without interlacement. This produces quasi-isotropic performance, meaning the laminate distributes loads evenly across the in-plane 0°, 90°, +45°, and –45° directions and mimics the mechanical behaviour of isotropic metals such as steel and aluminium, while weighing considerably less. For this reason, quasi-isotropic carbon fibre composites are sometimes referred to as “Black Aluminum.”

By comparison, orthogonal 0/90 laminates offer good stiffness in the principal directions, but they can be weaker and less stable under off-axis loads (e.g. ±45°). In applications where forces act from many directions or under vibration, quasi-isotropic laminates provide superior off-axis load distribution, improved impact performance, and greater damage tolerance.

Quasi-isotropic vs 0/90 schematics – fibre directions 0°, 90°, +45°, –45°

To further enhance the machining characteristics of the laminate, each sheet is faced with a 3k 2×2 twill weave on both sides. The twill surface improves machinability by mitigating fibre breakout during cutting or drilling, while also delivering a smooth surface finish that protects the structural plies. The result is a balanced laminate that combines the structural benefits of non-crimp quadaxial reinforcement with the machining advantages of a woven composite.

Where quasi-isotropic performance is beneficial:

  • Drone chassis and UAV frames – particularly where the body and arms are CNC-machined as one piece, quasi-isotropic laminates deliver strength in all directions, avoiding the weak planes found in 0/90 sheets.
  • Motorsport chassis inserts & crash structures – withstands multidirectional impact, torsional stresses, and energy absorption demands
  • Aerospace panels & UAV skins – resists both bending and torsion from aerodynamic forces
  • Robotics & EOAT arms – strength in every direction reduces weak planes and failure points
  • Marine panels – better resistance to slamming, twisting, and random wave loading

Applications

  • Motorsport chassis inserts & load-bearing parts
  • Aerospace & UAV structural panels
  • Robotics & EOAT (End of Arm Tooling)
  • Marine reinforcements & lightweight panels
  • CNC-machined tooling & precision components
  • Industrial and architectural composites

Surface Finish Classes

Surface Finish Classes:
These laminates are structural-grade, not cosmetic. Surfaces are defined by function, not appearance:
– Class A – Smooth, glossy, nearly flawless finish for visually demanding applications
– Class B – Peel ply, bonding-ready textured face
– Class C – Moulded smooth tool surface (not cosmetic, may have scratches)
– Class D – Smooth textured face, hygienic and washable

See our Surface Finish FAQ for full details.

Note: For all finishes, where UV exposure is present, surfaces should be protected with a suitable UV-stable coating.
